How to Clean a Lofra Rangehood

The hood is styled to match the range, which means it carries the same brass and the same rule about what may touch it.

Keep every degreaser off the brass and chrome trim on the range-styled canopies, and soak the filters away from the appliance so nothing runs down onto the cooker below. Work stainless along its brushed grain.

A Lofra hood sold to match a Dolcevita or heritage range carries the same trim as the cooker below it, which makes it the same problem at a higher elevation.

Same brass, worse position

Brass trim on a hood is harder to protect than brass on a range, because you are working above it with your arms raised and gravity is not on your side. Anything applied to the canopy runs down across the trim rail.

So drop the filters out and soak them elsewhere rather than cleaning them in place, wipe the canopy with a damp cloth rather than spraying it, and do the brass last with warm soapy water and its own cloth.

Cover the range below before you start. Whatever comes off a loaded canopy on the first wipe is greyer than people expect, and it lands on a cooker whose finish does not forgive it.

Stainless along the grain

Where the canopy is stainless rather than enamel, work along the brushed grain and never across it, then dry it. On a wide canopy at eye level, swirl marks are visible from the doorway.

The filters and what is behind them

Soaked flat, never a dishwasher for aluminium mesh, then the impeller housing with the power isolated. Our rangehood cleaning guide covers it.

Filters on a canopy this wide

A Lofra canopy matched to a wide range carries correspondingly large filters, and they are heavier than they look once loaded.

Support them with both hands as the catch releases. A dropped filter on a Dolcevita hob lands on brass and enamel from height, and that is a considerably worse outcome than a dirty filter.

They also want a container big enough to lie flat in. A large canopy filter propped at an angle in a kitchen sink only soaks along its bottom edge, which is why people conclude a soak did not work when what actually happened is that two thirds of the filter was never in the water. A bath, a laundry tub or a plastic storage box lying flat is the difference.

What actually goes wrong

Tarnished brass on the trim rail, from run-down.

A cooker marked by what came off the hood.

Swirl marks on stainless, from working across the grain.

Should you do it yourself?

Do it yourself for the filters, taken away and soaked.

Lofra rangehood questions

How do I clean a rangehood with brass trim?
Drop the filters out and soak them away from the appliance rather than cleaning them in place, wipe the canopy with a damp cloth rather than spraying it, and do the brass last with warm soapy water and its own cloth. Working above head height means gravity carries everything down across the trim, so removing the parts you can is the main protection.
Should I cover the cooker before cleaning the hood above it?
Yes, and it takes thirty seconds. What comes off a loaded canopy on the first wipe is greyer than people expect, and on a Lofra it lands on a cooker with brass trim and an enamel fascia that do not forgive it. A dust sheet or a couple of towels removes the entire category of risk.
How do I avoid marking a stainless canopy?
Work along the brushed grain rather than across it, with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, and dry it afterwards. On a wide canopy hanging at eye level, swirl marks from cleaning across the grain are visible from the doorway and cannot be polished out selectively.
