Catalytic ovens promise a clean that mostly happens by itself, and when you understand how they work, they live up to it for one part of the oven. The catch is that the catalytic feature only handles a slice of the job, and the rules for looking after the liners are strict. Scrub them or hit them with a chemical cleaner and you destroy the very thing you paid for. This guide explains how to clean a catalytic oven the right way: how the liners work, how to run the high-heat burn-off, what catalytic cleaning does not cover, and the do and do-not rules that keep the liners doing their job for years.
First, know what you have. Catalytic liners are rough, slightly porous panels coated with a special enamel, usually fitted to the side or rear walls of the oven cavity. They are not the same as a pyrolytic oven, which heats to extreme temperatures to incinerate everything. How catalytic liners work
The catalytic coating contains catalysts that absorb grease and oil splashes during normal cooking. At cooking temperatures above roughly 200 degrees, the coating oxidises that absorbed grease, breaking it down into ash, carbon dioxide and water vapour. In plain terms, the liners quietly eat the fat that splashes onto them while you cook, as long as the oven gets hot enough.
This is why catalytic liners work best when you cook at higher temperatures. A diet of low-and-slow cooking does not give the liners the heat they need to self-clean, and grease accumulates on them instead of breaking down.
The high-heat burn-off cycle
Even with regular cooking, the liners benefit from a deliberate burn-off to clear any grease they have not had time to process. This is the closest thing to an active cleaning cycle a catalytic oven has.
- 1Remove the racks, trays and anything else from the cavity.
- 2Wipe out any loose food debris and large spills from the base, since the liners do not clean the floor.
- 3Set the empty oven to its highest temperature, typically around 220 to 250 degrees.
- 4Run it for about an hour with the kitchen ventilated. The heat oxidises the grease the liners have absorbed.
- 5Let it cool completely, then wipe the cavity floor and door with a damp cloth.
Some light smoke during the burn-off is normal if the liners were carrying a lot of grease. If you see heavy smoke, the build-up is too high, which usually means the oven has been run too cool for the liners to keep up.
What catalytic cleaning does NOT cover
This is the part that surprises people. The catalytic system only cleans the liner panels themselves. It does absolutely nothing for the rest of the oven, which means a large share of the cavity still needs cleaning by hand. Catalytic liners do not clean:
- The oven floor or base, which collects the heaviest spills.
- The door glass, including between the panes.
- The roof of the cavity and the grill area.
- The racks, trays and side runners.
- The fan and fan housing in a fan-forced model.
- The exterior, controls, handle and door seal.
So even a perfectly functioning catalytic oven can still look and smell dirty, because everything except the liner panels is your responsibility. Many people assume the whole oven is self-cleaning and are puzzled when grease still builds up. The do and do-not rules for the liners
The liners are the heart of the system and they are surprisingly fragile in one specific way. The catalytic coating is porous, and that porosity is what lets it absorb and process grease. Anything that clogs or strips the surface kills its ability to self-clean. So:
- Do not scrub the liners. Abrasive pads, scourers and brushes grind down the coating and ruin it.
- Do not use oven cleaner, degreaser, caustic chemicals or detergent on the liners. These soak into the porous surface, block the catalysts and can permanently disable the self-cleaning action.
- Do not let heavy grease cake onto the liners. If they get badly clogged, they stop working.
- Do clean the rest of the oven (floor, glass, racks) carefully without getting cleaning product onto the liner panels.
- Do run regular high-heat cycles to keep the liners working.
If a chemical cleaner accidentally lands on a liner, the damage is usually done. Treat the liners as a no-touch zone for everything except heat.
Reactivating and replacing liners
If your liners are dull and greasy because the oven has been run too cool, you can often reactivate them. Take everything out, set the empty oven to its maximum temperature and run it for one to two hours so the accumulated grease finally oxidises. Repeat if needed. This high-heat reactivation revives liners that simply have not had enough heat to keep up.
If the liners are physically worn, flaking or have been scrubbed or chemically damaged, reactivation will not help. Catalytic liners are a consumable part with a finite life, often around five years depending on use, and they are designed to be replaced. Check your manufacturer for the correct replacement panels for your model and follow their fitting instructions.
