How to Clean an Artusi Cooktop

An Artusi kitchen frequently comes with an Artusi barbecue outside, and the two want opposite products. Do not share a cloth between them.

Photograph the layout, lift the trivets, caps and crowns, then soak the enamelled parts flat in hot water with a non-caustic degreaser for an hour. Clear ports with a wooden toothpick rather than metal and dry all cast iron by hand.

Artusi hobs are Italian-styled and distributed in Australia by Eurolinx, and they turn up mostly in newer Sydney kitchen renovations. The range leans gas, with induction higher up.

The method is the standard gas one

Artusi hobs lean gas, with induction higher up the range, and neither needs anything unusual. Our cooktop cleaning guide covers taking a gas hob apart, clearing ports and looking after the ignition electrodes, along with what an induction surface needs instead.

What is genuinely particular to Artusi is not the hob. It is what else is in the house.

Do not share products with the barbecue

Artusi is one of very few brands selling both a kitchen range and an outdoor BBQ, so an Artusi house frequently has both.

They want opposite treatment. A barbecue's cooking surfaces may be seasoned cast iron, where a degreaser strips the polymerised oil that is protecting it, or coated enamel, where a wire brush chips the coating through to metal that then rusts. Neither risk exists on a kitchen hob, and a product that is entirely appropriate indoors can do permanent damage outdoors.

Keep separate cloths and separate products. It sounds fussy and it is the single most likely way to ruin an Artusi barbecue plate.

Parts through Eurolinx

Support runs through the Australian distributor rather than an Italian parent, so a burner cap or trivet search should start there. The model plate is usually on the underside of the hob, which means looking up from inside the cabinet below.

Renovation appliances, and the age you assume

Artusi turns up in kitchen renovations rather than in original fit-outs, which produces a specific confusion about age.

An Artusi hob in a 1970s house is not fifty years old, it is as old as the renovation, and an Artusi hob in a new-looking kitchen may be older than the room if the joinery was refreshed and the appliances kept. Neither the house nor the cabinetry tells you anything reliable.

The model plate does, and on these it sits on the underside of the hob, which means looking up from inside the cabinet below. It is worth photographing once, because parts run through Eurolinx as the Australian distributor and the model number is what cross-references to them.

What actually goes wrong

A burner that will not simmer, from a cap on the wrong crown.

Rusted trivets, dried by air rather than by hand.

A cloth carried from the barbecue to the hob or back, which is how the wrong product reaches the wrong surface.

Should you do it yourself?

Do it yourself, lifting the burners every month or two before the base sets hard.

Get someone in if the hob base has years on it, or alongside the Artusi oven below and the Artusi rangehood above.

Artusi cooktop questions

Can I use the same products on an Artusi cooktop and an Artusi BBQ?
No, and Artusi is one of the few brands where this comes up, since it sells both. A barbecue's surfaces may be seasoned cast iron, where a degreaser strips the protective polymerised oil, or coated enamel, where a wire brush chips through to metal that rusts. Neither risk exists on a kitchen hob. Keep separate products and separate cloths.
Where is the model plate on an Artusi cooktop?
Usually on the underside of the hob, which means looking up from inside the cabinet below rather than at the appliance itself. Photograph it while you are there, because parts and manuals run through Eurolinx as the Australian distributor and the model number is what cross-references.
Why won't my Artusi burner hold a low flame?
Almost always a burner cap on the wrong crown after cleaning. Caps and crowns are sized per burner and are not interchangeable, and a large cap on a medium crown sits proud so the flame lifts off the ports. Photograph the hob from directly above before removing anything and match the pieces back.
