How to Clean an IKEA Cooktop

Search the rating plate, not the Swedish name. The appliance underneath is a Whirlpool and the parts world knows it by a different label.

Identify the hob from its rating plate rather than the Swedish product name, which IKEA retires every few years. The appliance is Whirlpool-built and badged for the retailer, so parts and manuals frequently cross-reference under the manufacturer instead of the shop.

IKEA hobs come with the kitchen rather than being chosen individually, and the useful facts about them are about identification rather than method.

Whirlpool underneath

IKEA appliances are manufactured by Whirlpool and badged for the retailer. The hob you have is a Whirlpool product with a Swedish name on it, which means components and manuals frequently cross-reference under the manufacturer rather than the shop.

That is worth knowing before concluding a burner cap or a trivet is unobtainable. See how to clean a Whirlpool cooktop for the equivalent approach.

The rating plate beats the name

IKEA product names are Swedish words retired and reused across ranges, so the name on your hob may return nothing today or may return a completely different appliance. The rating plate, usually on the underside, is the reliable identifier. Photograph it while you are looking up from inside the cabinet.

Whole-kitchen installs

Because IKEA sells kitchens rather than appliances, the hob, IKEA oven and IKEA rangehood went in on the same day and have done the same work. They reach the same condition together, and the hood is invariably the one furthest behind because nothing prompts anyone to open it.

The method

Standard, for whichever surface you have. Our cooktop cleaning guide covers induction and radiant glass as well as gas hobs with trivets and caps.

The benchtop join on a flat-pack kitchen

There is one thing about an IKEA hob that has nothing to do with the appliance and everything to do with what it is sitting in.

These go into laminate benchtops far more often than into stone, and a hob cut into laminate relies entirely on the seal around its edge to keep water out of the particleboard beneath. Once that seal is breached, the board swells, and swelling is not reversible: the benchtop lifts around the cut-out and stays lifted.

So on an IKEA kitchen the edge seal is worth more attention than it gets elsewhere. Wipe it rather than flooding it, never let water pool against it, and keep anything sharp well away from the silicone. If the laminate around the cut-out has already begun to lift, cleaning is not the fix and further water makes it worse.

What actually goes wrong

A parts search under a retired Swedish name.

A hood in the same kitchen never opened, which is why the hob keeps getting greasy.

A burner cap on the wrong crown, so one burner will not simmer.

Should you do it yourself?

Do it yourself. There is nothing unusual to damage here.

Get someone in for the whole kitchen at once, which given how these are bought is usually the sensible approach.

IKEA cooktop questions

Who manufactures IKEA cooktops?
Whirlpool, badged for the retailer. The hob is a Whirlpool product with a Swedish name on it, so components and manuals frequently cross-reference under the manufacturer rather than the shop. It is worth checking that before concluding a burner cap or trivet is unobtainable.
Where is the model number on an IKEA cooktop?
On the rating plate, usually on the underside of the hob, which means looking up from inside the cabinet below. Photograph it while you are there. The Swedish product name on the front is unreliable because IKEA retires and reuses those names across ranges, so it may return nothing or the wrong appliance entirely.
Should I clean the whole IKEA kitchen at once?
It usually makes sense, because IKEA sells kitchens rather than individual appliances, so the hob, oven and rangehood were installed on the same day and have done the same amount of work. The hood is invariably the one furthest behind, since nothing in ordinary use prompts anyone to open it, and it is the reason the hob keeps getting greasy.
