The appliance that never asks
Ovens announce their condition with smoke and smell. Cooktops are at waist height and visibly dirty. A rangehood does neither. It fails by degrees, quietly, and it never reaches a point where it stops working and forces the issue.
So in a matched Technika kitchen the oven gets cleaned when it starts smoking, the hob gets wiped because it is in the way, and the hood gets nothing for a decade.
The compounding part is what makes it worth raising. A hood that is no longer extracting properly puts grease straight back onto the hob and the oven front, so the two appliances people do maintain deteriorate faster because of the one they do not. Cleaning the Technika oven while ignoring the hood means cleaning the oven again sooner.
Filters and parts
Technika uses aluminium mesh on most models. Because the same hoods went into whole estates, standard filter sizes are widely stocked and available through the retailer that supplied the kitchen, and replacing a filter that will not come clean is inexpensive.
On a hood that has run ten years untouched, expect at least some of the filters to be past a soak. Hold one to the light after an hour's soak and a brush: if the middle stays dark while the edges clear, the interior has loaded solid and no further soaking reaches it.
The noise, and the decision people make about it
There is a sequence that plays out on almost every neglected hood and it is worth naming because it is reversible.
Grease builds unevenly on the impeller blades. The fan is no longer running true, so what was a quiet hum becomes a drone and then a rattle, worst on the highest speed. The household responds sensibly by using the lower settings, which are quieter.
At that point the hood is running at a speed that was never intended to handle a full cook, and the vapour it fails to catch goes onto the splashback, the cooktop and the front of the oven instead. The kitchen gets greasier, and nobody connects it to a fan setting chosen months earlier for a completely reasonable reason.
The noise was a symptom, not a preference. Cleaning the impeller and rebalancing what the grease unbalanced usually restores both the quiet and the extraction, and the higher speeds become usable again.
