Almost every Westinghouse has plain vitreous enamel and no self-clean cycle, so the method is soak and dwell rather than heat. A non-caustic cleaner with thirty minutes of contact time does most of it. Newer models may have SteamBake, which softens residue but does not remove it.
Westinghouse is the most common oven brand in New South Wales homes and one of the least written about, which tells you something about how the internet decides what is worth explaining. There is no proprietary coating to describe and no clever cycle to demonstrate. It is an oven, it is built to keep working, and an enormous number of them have been doing so since the early 2000s.
That is actually the whole brief. A Westinghouse clean is not about avoiding damage to a special surface. It is about dealing with a genuinely heavy carbon load on a surface that can take whatever you need to do to it.
What you almost certainly have
Open the door and look at the rating plate on the inside of the frame. Then look at the cavity.
Plain vitreous enamel. Smooth, dark, glossy, hard. This is the overwhelming majority of Westinghouse ovens in service. There is no catalytic liner to protect and no non-stick finish to preserve. It takes a cleaner, it takes a dwell, and it takes firm work with a non-scratch pad.
SteamBake, on newer models. A water reservoir or a recess in the cavity floor that you fill before a cycle, producing steam that softens residue. It is a genuine help on light soiling and it is not a self-clean function. On an oven that has not been done in five years it will make almost no difference on its own.
Pyrolytic, on a small number of recent models. If the door locks itself during a cleaning cycle, you have one. Most people reading this will not.
The practical consequence is that there is no shortcut. Where a Bosch owner runs a regeneration cycle and a Miele owner uses warm water and patience, a Westinghouse owner does the work. The compensation is that you cannot easily wreck it.
The age problem, which is the real problem
Westinghouse ovens last. That is the brand's genuine strength and it is also why the cleans are hard.
An oven that has been roasting for fifteen or twenty years, cleaned occasionally at eye level and never above it, develops a black lacquer on the cavity roof and in the back corners that is nothing like ordinary grease. It has been baked, cooled and baked again several thousand times, and it has more in common with varnish than with fat. A wipe does not touch it. A single application of cleaner barely touches it.
What works on it is repeated dwell. Apply, wait, work it, rinse, look at what is left, and apply again. Two or three cycles of that will take off what an hour of scrubbing will not, because the chemistry needs contact time and the mechanical work only removes what has already been softened.
This is also why the first professional clean on an old Westinghouse takes considerably longer than the ones after it, and why we would rather tell you that in advance than surprise you with it.
Cleaning it, step by step
- 1Cold oven, switched off at the wall.
- 2Everything out. Racks, trays, side racks. Westinghouse side racks usually unclip or unscrew from the cavity wall with a single fixing each.
- 3Soak the racks and trays in hot water with a non-caustic degreaser, in a bath or laundry tub lined with an old towel, for an hour or more. On an old oven this is the least glamorous and most effective part of the job.
- 4Apply a non-caustic oven cleaner across the whole cavity. Roof first, because it is the surface where cleaner runs off fastest and the one that needs the most contact time. Laying a cleaner-dampened cloth against the roof keeps it in contact instead of letting it drain.
- 5Give it thirty minutes, not five. Then work it with a non-scratch pad, firmly. Enamel takes it.
- 6Repeat on whatever is left rather than escalating to something abrasive. Time beats force on baked carbon.
- 7Deal with the fan chamber if you can. Most Westinghouse fan ovens have a rear baffle plate held by a central nut or a few screws, and behind it the fan blades carry hardened fat that causes the smell people assume is the cavity.
- 8Rinse repeatedly. Several passes with clean water and a clean cloth.
- 9Glass and frame last.
What never to use
- Steel wool and scouring powder. Enamel is hard but it is not unscratchable, and a dulled patch holds dirt worse than the surface it replaced.
- A blade held flat against the door glass. Ceramic scraper at a shallow angle, after softening.
- Caustic oven cleaner on the door seal or the fascia, which perishes the first and lifts the printed markings on the second.
- Cold water on warm glass.
- Cleaner in the fan chamber to the point where it runs into the motor.
- Anything on a SteamBake reservoir except water and a descaler, if your model has one and the water where you live is hard.
What actually goes wrong
Giving up too early. By far the most common. People apply cleaner, wipe it after five minutes, conclude the oven is beyond help and live with it. It usually is not, it just needs three applications rather than one.
Escalating to abrasives when the first attempt fails, which permanently dulls an enamel cavity that would have come clean with more patience.
A perished door seal, common on ovens this age, and often noticed for the first time during a clean rather than caused by it. A failed seal costs heat and cooking accuracy, and it is a replaceable part.
A persistent smell after a spotless clean, which is the fan chamber almost every time.
Rust at the cavity floor edges on very old units, where enamel has chipped and never been dried properly. Worth knowing about, because a strong cleaner sitting on bare steel makes it worse.
Should you do it yourself?
Do it yourself on an oven that gets cleaned once or twice a year. A non-caustic cleaner, a proper dwell and a Saturday morning handles it, and there is very little you can damage.
Do it yourself on a newer model with SteamBake, using the steam cycle first to soften and then cleaning normally. The cycle genuinely helps on light soiling.
Get someone in if the oven is more than a decade old and has never had a full clean, if the cavity roof is black and hard, if there is a smell that survives cleaning, or if you are at the end of a lease and need it to pass an inspection rather than merely look better. That last case is very common on this brand, because Westinghouse is what is in most rentals.

Keeping it clean
- 1Wipe spills while the oven is warm rather than hot, and before the next roast bakes them in again. Ninety per cent of the difficulty on this brand is accumulated, not inherent.
- 2Look at the cavity roof every few months. It is the surface that gets missed and the one that hardens.
- 3Cover fatty roasts for part of the cook.
- 4Use a tray under anything likely to spill, because a clean floor is far easier than a cleaned floor.
- 5Check the door seal once a year. Close the door on a sheet of paper and see whether it drags when you pull it. If it slides out freely, the seal has gone.
